The massive amount of information about how to have good sex on the Internet is ample proof of the fact that comparatively few people are satisfied with their sex life. After all, if you believed you were enjoying the best sex possible, you wouldn’t be searching for information on how to do it better, surely?
So let’s join in the fun, and have a look at some ideas that help you break out of the boredom, and increase the satisfaction and pleasure you both experience during lovemaking.
And there’s nowhere better to start than in the good old arena of sexual positions.
Man on Top
Almost everybody seems to start making love in the missionary position – man on top, woman on the bottom, face-to-face. Indeed, most people lose their virginity in this position.
And, you know, even though this position is often denigrated these days, written off as “old-fashioned” or a symbol of male patriarchy, it is still very satisfying.
Certainly if you read the articles by Cosmopolitan and the like on the Internet, you’d think that this would be the last position anybody would ever want to try.
The best guide to sex positions on the web can be found here.
Yet when you look at the positions that people actually use when making love, guess what? Yep – the good old man on top comes out favorite by a long way – it’s used by more people, more often, to make love than any other.
And there has to be a reason for that! Do you think that might just be the fact that it’s very satisfying, and both men and women really enjoy it?
You see, there’s a lot going for the man on top position – it allows the man and woman to have good, intimate connection and look at each other, there’s lots of bodily contact, and the man can support himself on his elbows as he thrusts.
It’s also highly adaptable – the woman can lie on her back with her legs flat on the bed spread wide, or she can draw them up her sides, or even further up with her knees coming up to her chest.
And perhaps one of the reasons man on top is so popular is that it feels good – it’s so flexible and adaptable that every couple can find the ideal orientation of their bodies to best suit the angle at which the man’s penis enters the woman’s vagina (remember that not all penises and vaginas are the same shape or size!)
Another variation of man on top is for the woman to lie on her stomach, and have the man enter her from behind: the advantage of this position is that the man’s penis can more likely strike her G spot in this orientation – although if he penetrates too deeply, he might hit her cervix, which can feel uncomfortable.
Do you know how to make a woman come during lovemaking? We’ll look at this in a moment…. and don’t forget, the best approach to sex is one of equality, so if you want to know how to give a woman an orgasm, read on.
Woman on Top
This is a highly recommended position for first timers because it gives the woman control over the speed, rhythm and depth of penetration. It’s most commonly seen as the woman sitting on her man, straddling him around his hips, guiding his penis into her vagina, and then either remaining upright or lying on top of him, with her legs bent or stretched out behind her.

Most people seem to enjoy having the woman simply sit straight up onto the man, which allows the possibility of both clitoral and breast play for the woman – either with her own hands, or with stimulation by the man. Either can help her cum more easily with the additional clitoral stimulation.
The other advantage is that in this position the woman can “grind” her clitoris against the man’s body as she leans forward, thereby giving her a much greater chance of reaching orgasm.
People call this woman on top position the Cowgirl. And it follows that the “Reverse Cowgirl” is where the woman sits on top of the man with his erect penis inside her as she faces his feet. In this position the sensations can be wonderful, but there’s much less intimacy, so this is more of a physical sensation than an emotional experience.
Side-by-side sex
A wonderful position for couples who want the pleasure of intimacy, eye gazing, lots of bodily contact, and the possibility of manual stimulation for the woman’s clitoris. (You know that’s the way most women get off, right? But being able to make her orgasm with your penis inside her is a fabulous feeling.)
Side by side is certainly a position for slow and gentle sex, because you’re not going to be able to thrust very hard or fast in this position. One of the disadvantages, of course, is that one partner has to have a leg underneath the other’s, and this can become little bit uncomfortable.
If the woman is facing towards the man, it’s a very intimate position and one that can help men last a lot longer before they ejaculate, since the penis seems to receive much less stimulation in this position – yet the woman still receives plenty of internal vaginal stimulation – which raises the interesting possibility of G spot stimulation and G spot orgasm for the woman.
And as you probably know, if it’s done with a woman facing away from the man, this position is sometimes called “spooning”, in which sex can be both delightful and sensual, and you can fall asleep in that position afterwards.
Rear Entry Position
Usually used to describe the sex position when a woman is kneeling and man either stands or kneels behind her and enters her from behind.
It’s a “love it or hate it” position – men tend to love it, and a lot of women tend to hate it, because of lack of intimacy and the suggestion of male dominance.
On the other hand of course, some women find that rear entry is highly exciting: this is all a matter of personal taste. One great advantage of rearentry is that there’s a good chance the woman will have an orgasm; the position allows deep and powerful thrusting by the man and gives the woman the opportunity to feel abandoned, out-of-control and highly sexual.
Female Orgasm During Intercourse
It’s highly amusing that a certain magazine that seems to thrive on providing titbits of sex information, but shall remain nameless – oh, go on then, it’s Cosmopolitan – not only publishes articles on how few women reach orgasm during sexual intercourse, but also then publishes an article headed “Your Orgasm Guaranteed” which is about “Seven positions that are all but guaranteed to bring a woman to orgasm”!
Anyway, Cosmo may have useful information if you want to have a woman orgasm during sexual intercourse. And this is certainly a beautiful experience, so let’s examine what Cosmo has to say about the possibility of making a woman come during sex.
Man on top
To start with, the missionary position can be adapted into something much more likely to help a woman achieve orgasm.
To start with, they suggest that when the woman is lying on the bed, she puts a pillow under her butt, lifts her hips, and moves her legs up and backwards towards her shoulders. I’ve always thought this position looks a bit undignified, but it’s very arousing for men and fun for some women.
Of course it allows deep penetration, as well as a good view of the man’s erection sliding in and out of the woman’s vagina – which is very arousing.
Men can also stimulate their partner’s G spot, which can be good for her. However, few men can last long enough during sexual intercourse for a woman to reach orgasm through G spot stimulation.
In fact, most men are very likely to ejaculate before the woman’s reached orgasm. So when the woman is sufficiently aroused, it’s a good idea to switch into the coital alignment technique position. And you can read more about the coital alignment technique here.
This involves regular rubbing of the man’s pubic bone on the woman’s clitoris, which is likely to bring her to an orgasm – and perhaps even lead to simultaneous orgasm the couple.
Rear Entry
Next, Cosmo offer an adaptation of the rear entry position which is supposed to make it much more likely that a woman will have an orgasm.
Instead of the conventional kneeling man entry from behind, which admittedly can give woman a great sense of excitement, the woman needs to lie on her stomach, lifting her butt slightly, as the man enters her from behind. This gives rhythmic stimulation to her vag as he thrusts in and out, and also lets the woman grind her clitoris against the bed.
Woman On Top
As we mentioned before, woman on top is often a good way for the woman to achieve orgasm easily – even if that’s only because she has access to her clitoris and she can stimulate it if she wants to do so!
And also, she can rub it against the man’s body as she leans forward, so that the clitoris receives all stimulation should needs to bring herself to orgasm.
An interesting variation on all of these positions is one where the woman lies on a table on her back, and the man stands between her legs – with the woman resting her feet on the edge of the table, or perhaps putting one foot on the man’s shoulder.
The great advantage here is that the man is standing and can reach every part of the woman’s body to give her additional pleasure, stroking and caressing her breasts and clitoris in particular.
The final sex position for bringing a woman to orgasm that deserves mention is one where the man sits with his legs in front of him and the woman straddles him so the couple are face-to-face.
This gives the woman great control of the speed and pace of movements during sex, and allows her to avoid the up-and-down motion usually used in sitting sex (which can be tiring).
Instead, by moving her body against his, she can rub her clitoris against her man’s body; moreover, if she leans backwards, his penis is going to press against her G spot and potentially give her additional stimulation, all of which might well help to make a woman come during lovemaking. And if you, dear man, know how to give a woman an orgasm, she will be fulfilled and happy.
